Over the past month I have been wondering what internal drive possessed me to enter an Ironman.

Join me for the journey, as between now and the 1st March 2008 I hope to bring you a few stories on how training is going, my motivations, my struggles, my experiences, my injuries, my progress and what is keeping me on the straight and narrow in order for me to complete my very first Ironman!

A little background history on me….

I have always been very “sporty” but for the past 9 years I have been a competitive cyclist representing New Zealand at both the Commonwealth Games and Olympics. This year I was racing in North America and as so often happens in professional women’s cycling, my team fell apart due to insufficient funds and poor management.

I came home early and after a good break wanted something new. The breeze was blowing me in a new direction and I felt ready to tackle something else.

A number of my friends have competed in the Ironman and it is one event I have often toyed with the idea of participating in. On the 15th October I entered the Ironman New Zealand.

Combined with that massive commitment is the fact that I have a knee injury at the moment and can not run more than 10 minutes.  For fear of missing out on an entry I decided the first step to take was to come up with the dosh and enter. DONE, ticked that one off my “list of things to do”. The next step is to get the knee right! I am currently in the process of doing that.

We are 4 months out and I haven’t been for a run over 30minutes for 6 weeks. I am not panicking yet, but if by the end of this month I am not comfortably running I will most definitely start to PANIC!!

I am off to the Physio today for the 3rd, 4th, 5th, ….no I’m confusing that with my appointments to the Osteo….ok, so I am giving myself 2 more weeks before I consider what my next step is….perhaps a doctor with a big needle is necessary?

So, clearly I am still optimistic that the injury will come right and I will be able to run a marathon after time trialling 180km, having swum 3.8km without drowning. It is going to be a fun filled 4 months and I hope to bring you regular updates on my progress.

Finally I would like to Thank SUB for their sponsorship and I hope to provide them with positive exposure (nothing nude) and advertising as their support is outstanding. I firmly believe in what Sarah hopes to achieve with her range of bikes, clothing and water. Getting women out there and being active is what it is all about. Finding a reason, not an excuse…..even if you have set backs along the way this is what makes you a stronger person.
