Did You Know - Most People Have Roughly The Same Excuses For Not Exercising!

While I hate the idea of starting off with NEGATIVES, I’d quite like to get them out of the way first so that hopefully we can all move along!

Here are the 5 most common “obstacles” women in particular put in the way of regular exercise, along with ways to overcome them!

1. I Don’t Have Enough Time

After sorting out kids, work and supermarket shopping, many women cite lack of time as the #1 reason for not exercising or eating well! So how do we overcome this?

  • PRIORITIZE: Make exercise of high importance in your list of things to do and you will find the time!

  • SCHEDULE: Make yourself the most important “client” and make your exercise an unbreakable appointment!

  • SEIZE MOMENTS: Keep your exercise gear handy and if an opportunity arises, grab it and do some exercise!

  • WORK OUT SMART NOT LONG: Do just enough exercise to achieve your goals… Keep it simple!

2. It’s Too Hard

Believe it or not, exercise doesn’t have to be an awful, painful, miserable experience. So many women throw themselves into a rigorous regime which lasts a couple of weeks and then is all too hard to maintain.

  • Ease into it

  • Listen to your body

Of course you may have a few aches and pains to start with, but let’s face it if you haven’t exercised regularly for some time your body will need time to adjust!

3. It’s Boring

You need to find something that 'floats your boat'!

Get creative…If you find walking/running mind numbing then do something else like play tennis, squash or cross-train. As long as it’s raising your heart rate it is doing the trick. Bear in mind though that a repetitive exercise like walking/ jogging may help you relax and de-stress!

Work out with a buddy and you will probably end up having a laugh and being amazed at how fast the time goes.

4. I Didn’t see Results

Results depend on several factors:

  • Where you are starting from: you don’t suddenly lose fitness overnight, so you can’t suddenly regain it.

  • Genetics: sad, but true. Some people appear to “buff up” just by walking into the gym!

  • Age: as we age, if we let our fitness slip it takes longer to regain it.

  • Dedication: this really speaks for itself.

So you need to be realistic about the results that you are getting and set achievable goals and keep track of your progress. (More of this in future articles)

5. I’m Too Self-Conscious

For many who are just starting out on the fitness journey (or even thinking about it), this is a huge stumbling block.

My advice is…Develop a support network. By this I mean get your husband/ partner, sister, kids, workmates all “on side “and backing you all the way. Find the exercise and location that suits you. Whether it is the local park, on the water or at your local gym.

One more thing. You know most people are busy concentrating on themselves rather than you! So take a deep breath and get on out there!

Hopefully I have managed to turn a few negatives into positives and given you ways of at least starting to make Exercise a part of your lives

Happy Training
