Welcome to SUB Coaching Tips
Welcome to the 'Coaching Tips' page with the SUB Coach Brendon Cameron.
(I’ve had to write this, as Doon refuses to do any self-banter)
Brendon (aka Doon) is a dark horse. He was actually been a NZ representative cyclist for 9 years – starting off at the Junior Worlds when he was a wee kipper as a Road cyclist. He spent a few of NZ winters in Europe, racing with a bunch of young Kiwis for the Belgian Road season, before his first Commonwealth Games selection in the NZ Track Team for the Commonwealth Games in Victoria in 1994.
He was part of NZ’s Team Pursuit team for 6 years – competing in 2 Commonwealth Games, 2 Olympic Games and 3 World Championships. He must have shown a bit of responsibility early on (here’s the level head that counter-acts my lopsided one!), as he was name the Team Captain for the later part of his career (or maybe he was just the oldest guy in the team?).
Doon retired from track cycling after the Sydney Olympics, and finished his cycling career in Canada, where he raced for a Canadian Road team for a season, then came home to win the National Time Trial Title here in NZ.
He thought he’d take a break from cycling a bit after that, so he tried his hand with Ironman triathlons in 2001 (not sure how that works?). Obviously that wasn’t enough of a break, so he went back for two more the following years.
Meanwhile he started coaching!
He is UCI Coaching Level II qualified, and his qualifications (in real life coaching) range from coaching young novice club track riders, to Senior Road Cyclists, to Ironman athletes and Olympic Games track cyclists.
Together with his own cycling experience (which I reckon counts for a whole heap in the coaching game), his temperament and his subsequent hands-on coaching (not to mention having to look after me full-time for 8 months), he is one of NZ’s most qualified coaches.
And he just loves it!
So any questions on anything cycling - from triathlons, time-trialing and track cycling, to road racing/training – he’s keen as to help you out. He especially likes the tricky questions – so throw him some really curly ones!...contact SUB Coach here and fire away (but please note that your questions will be posted and answered on this page - only your initials shown and no personal details!)
