Safety Tips

General Information

Events are great fun to participate in but in all the excitement we can often get carried away and forget about some basic safety items. So here are some general tips to ensure that you enjoy yourself as much as you can:

It's a long day so make sure you eat properly before you leave home. Get that Molenberg and other long lasting energy items such as bananas into you.

It’s summer soon, so we will (hopefully) be getting some great weather, so make sure that you put on your sunscreen and enough so it lasts all day.

Hydrate. Hydration is so important and can be so easy to forget about, so again make sure that you drink plenty of water throughout the day.

Run/Walk Course

Some basic safety tips whilst out on the run and walking course:

The Course is not completely closed to all traffic so there will be vehicles out there with you from time to time. So when you are out exercising just be sensible. Look out for vehicles and always give way to them.

Always follow the course directions. Please familiarise yourself before the event, so you are aware of where you need to be going. Marshall will be out there to help you if you get in trouble.

Please assist others if you think they may need it. Help others like you would like others to help you.

Cycle Course

Make sure your bike is in good working order before the event...!

Double check that your helmet is fastened properly and that any loose clothing or bag straps are secured.

No roads are closed on these courses and you will encounter vehicles on the road during the event. It is crucial that official road rules are observed at all times.

Riders must keep left at all times. Always stay on the left hand side of the centre line.

If you wish to pass somebody during the event, make sure that there is plenty of space between the rider you are passing and the centre line. It is also a good Idea to warn the rider you are overtaking that you are coming past!

Try to keep at least a bike length between you and the rider in front of you. This gives you an "out" if something happens to them.

Don't be afraid to signal or tell someone if you want to move left or right, or to pass someone.

If you pass an obstacle on the road (like a big pot-hole, or debris) try and warn the riders behind you? This could save some pile-ups of anyone behind you!

Try and keep a consistent pace as often as possible when riding with others.

There will be a mobile mechanic on the course. In case of a mechanical failure - let a marshal on the course know and wait for the mobile mechanic to reach you.

Medic One will have 1 ambulance on the course, 1 at the Maraetai turnaround point and 1 ambulance at the Clevedon show grounds. Marshals will have contact with medics. If you are carrying a cell phone - programme in the organisers cell number in case of emergencies! 027 244 6385.

Once again - the road is not officially closed!!!
